If you’ve read my airline reviews here, you’ve seen the same complaint over and over: even the best infotainment systems get prayer times wrong. Turkish — genuinely state of the art in this area — shows qibla direction and the next prayer time, but for where the plane is right now. That’s not the question. The question is: when will fajr actually catch up with me?
The problem: you’re racing the sun
On an eastbound long-haul, you’re flying toward the sunrise. The day compresses: dawn doesn’t arrive on the schedule of any city’s timetable — not your departure city’s, not your destination’s, not the patch of ocean below you. On a red-eye to Europe or Asia, fajr can arrive absurdly early by your body clock, and no seatback display will warn you.
Westbound is the forgiving direction — the day stretches, and on some flights you barely need to pray at all. Karachi to San Francisco is 14+ hours, yet timed such that I didn’t have to pray on the plane once. Eastbound red-eyes are the opposite: two prayers is typical, three isn’t rare.
Maghrib, at least, is observable: wait for the sun to disappear. But fajr? True dawn is subtle on the ground and harder at altitude — and only visible on the eastern horizon, which requires a window on the right side of the geometry, or a camera view (one more reason I keep praising airlines with tail cams and dinging those without).
My rough method (works without any app)
Here’s the rule of thumb I used for years on eastbound flights, and it works for any prayer, not just fajr:
- Look up the prayer’s time at your destination, in destination local time.
- Work out how many hours before your arrival that is.
- Halve it. That’s roughly how many hours before arrival the prayer will start on the plane.
Example: your flight lands at 10am, and fajr at the destination is at 4am — six hours before arrival. Halve it: expect fajr on board roughly three hours before landing.
The intuition: you’re flying into the day, so the sun’s events reach you about twice as fast as the destination clock suggests. It’s a heuristic, not an astronomical calculation — flight path, season and latitude all bend it — but it has served me well as a planning tool: I know whether to sleep first and pray later, or the reverse. And if you have a window or camera, you can confirm dawn on the eastern horizon as it happens.
The proper solution: flightSalah
That rough method eventually bothered me enough that we built the real thing. flightSalah does the actual calculation: give it your departure airport, arrival airport, departure time and flight duration, and it computes the prayer times along your route — expressed the way you actually need them on a plane: hours after departure and hours before arrival. No more halving heuristics, no more squinting at the horizon (though I still do, for the joy of it).

A note on my practice
When traveling, I combine dhuhr with asr, and maghrib with isha, which considerably simplifies the on-board problem — often reducing it to just fajr. This is my practice based on the allowances for travelers; schools of thought differ on combining, so please consult your own scholar for what’s right for you.
Practical tips, distilled
- Westbound: check before you board — you may need zero prayers in the air, even on very long flights.
- Eastbound red-eye: assume fajr will come early and plan sleep around it. Use the method above or flightSalah before takeoff, while you still have internet.
- Seat choice: if determining dawn visually matters to you, favor the side of the plane facing the equator-ish/east geometry of your route — or just pick an airline with cameras (see my reviews for who has them).
- Do the lookup on the ground. Prayer-time apps and websites need connectivity; the plane may not have it. Two minutes at the gate saves guesswork over the ocean.
